David was Michelangelo’s most famous statue. This statue depicts the story of David and Goliath. Michelangelo captures an image of David before he strikes down the giant Goliath with a simple slingshot. This statue stands 14 feet high and is made out of marble. He began working on it in 1501when he was 26 years old and finished in 1504. At first, a sculptor Agostino di Duccio was supposed to create the statue, but he stopped working on it. The unfinished block of marble laid there for 35 years until Michelangelo began to work on it. The David is unique because it doesn’t include the head of the slain head of Goliath. All other statues of David included the head of Goliath. The ancient Greeks often depicted their male heroes in without clothes and in a standing position, and Michelangelo meant to imitate that. The magnificent statue can be found at Accademia di Belle Arti Firenze in Florence, Italy.
